After the peace proposal was accepted, he was important in establishing the Iroquois union together with Deganawida; Hiawatha was a lawgiver, chief spokespersons for the council, keeper of the wampum (Wampum are traditional sacred shell beads of tribes of the Native Americans), and a charismatic orator.
